Terme dei Papi
The Terme dei Papi are the oldest baths in the city of Viterbo. These thermal waters were already appreciated in ancient times and owe their name Terme dei Papi, to the fact that Pope Nicholas V loved their beneficial properties so much that he built a building that took the name of Bagno del Papa. Even today these spas are the most famous in the city of Viterbo and in the Lazio region, known for the properties of the water and for the extraordinary beneficial effects.

The waters of the Terme dei Papi in Viterbo come from different natural springs and are of two different types: hyperthermal between 40°C and 65°C, they are sulphurous, sulphate, bicarbonate, alkaline earthy waters; hypothermic between 20°C and 30°C, they are bicarbonate, sulphate, alkaline, earthy, carbonic, ferruginous waters.

Acqua & Terme Fiuggi
The Fiuggi Hot Springs are ancient and historically famous. The therapeutic characteristics of the waters are known throughout the world, and the baths also give the spa town an environmentally distinctive connotation. The Bonifacio thermal baths frequented mainly in the mornings are immersed in chestnut woods while the Anticolane thermal baths, frequented in the afternoons, are structured esenzialemnte on gardens and nature walks.
Fiuggi’s waters belong to the group of natural oligomineral waters. This characteristic is determined by the tufa formation of the Fiuggi basin itself, which, by alternating permeable layers, filters the waters, which thus come to lose their mineral substances altogether. Extremely effective in detoxifying treatments, they are especially indicated in the prevention and treatment of kidney and gout.
The waters of Fiuggi were known since Roman times as “Fons Arilla.” In fact, ruins of buildings and remains of Roman roads have been found in the area where these springs flow. In the Middle Ages they became famous because Pope Boniface VIII made regular use of them to treat his kidney stones; later Michelangelo, in 1549, drew benefit from them against the “stone sickness” that afflicted him. Wrote Giovanni Papini about Michelangelo: “Little did we miss that, the indefatigable artist, who had handled and carved so many stones, was not killed by a small stone treacherously formed inside his old body”. A year of treatment and Michelangelo recovered.

Acque Albule
The completely renovated and refurbished amenities of the New Thermal Spa, in addition to traditional cures from thermal medicine, offer different types of wellness programmes thanks to utilisation of the latest technologies. A virtual journey in which the body and thermal water come together to enable the mind to relax. A series of water jets is positioned in such a way that, in one complete revolution, all the muscles from the neck to the soles of the feet, are massaged by the water. These are the characteristics of the indoor sulphurous pool. The sauna and Steam Bath enables heat lovers to immerse their bodies in the sulphurous vapours (Steam Bath) to purify themselves from within, and in the dry heat (sauna) for a detoxifying effect.
The waters from the Acque Albule spring are sulphurous and hypothermal. They retain the name that was given to them back in ancient times due to their whitish colour (from the Latin word “albula” = whitish water), caused by the gaseous emulsion that forms on the surface when there is a decrease in pressure, releasing the dissolved carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide from the water. Water arrives at the spa from Lakes Regina and Colonnelle, north of Via Tiburtina, at a speed of 3,000 litres per second. The mineral water maintains a constant temperature of 23°C throughout the year. Chemical analyses in the 19th century confirmed the therapeutic capacity of the Acque Albule waters. We now know that sulphur is a powerful natural antibacterial ingredient with major anti-inflammatory effects.
