Perfectly situated on a hilltop in West Lake Hills, overlooking downtown Austin, Texas, this home features a clever blend of modern design and mid-century architectural heritage. Recently renovated and expanded by Clayton Korte Architects, it preserves the essence of the original 1970s structure while gaining twice as much space to conform to the needs of contemporary living.

The Clayton Korte architectural studio is the prime contractor for the renovation and extension of this magnificent villa, perched atop a hill in the West Lake Hills neighborhood of Austin, Texas. The restructuring is distinguished by imposing glazing along the south walls, providing intense natural light and enveloping the outdoor living oasis, pool and patio. Additionally, floor-to-ceiling windows account for over 40% of the exterior surface area, reinforcing the link between indoors and outdoors. Inside, the living room, dining room and kitchen open onto an open-air hall, perfect for family gatherings and receptions. The main residence is connected to a former “casita” by an extension on the second level, which accommodates a master bedroom and bathroom, subtly placed behind an open staircase. Upstairs, the children’s bedrooms have individual balconies with stunning views of the garden and hills. The design preserves elements of the original house, such as exposed wooden decks, wood-beamed ceilings and stone walls, while integrating them harmoniously into the new construction. The inviting interior spaces feature plaster walls and terrazzo floors that complement white oak cabinetry. The bedrooms, study and staircase atrium feature white oak floors, and artwork adds touches of color. A carport echoes the pool canopy, better integrating the structures into the natural environment. A large covered patio and open-air spaces extend the living space of this sublime home.
