New Oppo towers, in harmony with high-tech connectivity
Following an international competition, the Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) office is selected to build, in Shenzhen, China, four interconnected towers 200 meters high, forming the new headquarters of Oppo, China’s leading manufacturer of smartphones and 5th in the world, with more than 40,000 employees in more than 40 countries. It is expected to be completed in early 2025.
A pioneer of new communication technologies in smart devices and internet services, Oppo, which launched its first phone in 2008, has established six research institutes, four research and development centers, and a global design studio. To meet this growth, this head office will continue its commitment to connectivity by design. Designed by ZHA, it is built around four interconnected towers, reaching a height of 200 meters (42 floors), with a total area of 185,000 m2. The complex consists of two towers of open and flexible spaces, connected by a vertical 20-storey hall, and two other services, providing vertical circulation. Oriented to maximize the view of Shenzhen Bay, they taper inward at lower levels, creating large expanses on the street side. The external location of the service area frees the center of each floor from obstructions, providing an uninterrupted view throughout the building for better interaction between employees. Large atriums unite all occupants, thanks to visual connectivity, helping to foster collaboration between the various departments of the company. Imagined as a civic site for the city with a public footbridge crossing its center diagonally, the building will include a landscaped plaza, an art gallery, shops and restaurants and will constitute a direct link to the adjacent station of the metro network of Shenzhen. The 10th floor Sky Plaza will provide residents, visitors and employees with dining, leisure and entertainment venues, while the rooftop Sky Lab will offer spectacular views of one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Following LEED Gold certification for ZHA’s Leeza Soho Tower, Beijing, and Generali Tower, Milan, the next Oppo headquarters is designed to target LEED Gold from the US Green Building Council; developed with 3D modeling of building information and energy management systems to optimize efficiency.
