Dubai-based architecture and interior design firm ROAR has transformed two floors of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure’s Tower in Abu Dhabi into the new National Academy for Childhood Development (NACD). This pioneering academy, the first of its kind in the UAE, empowers practitioners, caregivers, and parents with the expertise and skills needed to support families in nurturing and educating children while also focusing on the preservation of the Arabic language and UAE national heritage.

The National Academy for Childhood Development plays a crucial role in the social and emotional growth of children, and Roar’s design vision reflects this mission by creating an environment that fosters well-being, inclusivity, and family cohesion. Spanning over 5,000 sqm across two floors, NACD is set to become a hub for modern education and cultural preservation. Connected by a coherent style, one floor is dedicated to students, the other to staff. According to Roar founder and creative director Pallavi Dean, the design is inspired by the moment a water drop hits the earth’s surface, creating ripples that expand outward. This metaphor is captured through a variety of circular structures and curvilinear shapes, which symbolize the impact and reach of quality early childhood development. “We wanted to pay homage to the time-honoured tradition of pearl diving that has long been emblematic of Emirati culture, explains Pallavi. Like a precious pearl falling into the water, the central motif cascades effortlessly, casting ripples that reverberate throughout the space. These patterns are delicately woven into the ceiling and flooring, mirroring the gentle dance of light and shadow found beneath the sea’s surface.” A welcoming focal point with a self-service counter, warm educational areas, suspended tables, modular seating and flexible spaces to meet the needs of educators and students alike, all enhanced by elements reminiscent of UAE heritage and reflecting local architectural influences with materials and textures in natural hues from warm sands to rich desert browns. Roar’s aim was to create a convivial setting rather than a conventional academy. The result is a place full of character and minimalist elegance.
