Cosmos and Matter: sustainable design takes center stage in a Parisian apartment

Need an excuse to go to Paris? Here’s a great one: created by Cosmos and Matter – a company founded by the Sustainable Design Association in 2021 to promote virtuous practices in the world of design – a new project, currently located in a superb 250 m2 Haussmann apartment, offers an avant-garde experience that reimagines the way we connect to a space and interact with the objects and furniture that uniquely shape our interiors.
Housed in an elegant 250 m2 Haussmann apartment in the 7th arrondissement, adorned with elegant moldings and classic parquet floors, this ephemeral space celebrates sustainable design in style. It brings together aesthetics, well-being and non-toxic materials through a selection of remarkable pieces from innovative designers, skilled craftsmen and visionary artists. “We believe that the nature of the choices we make every day has an impact not only on our inner selves, but also on the state of the world in general. We want to offer a new art of living that draws deeply on the knowledge and wisdom of our ancestors, while caring for the future. Living in a space is much more complex than simply interacting with materials, explains Marie-Cassandre Bultheel, co-founder of Cosmos and Matter with Hélène Aguilar. It’s a delicate and precious relationship with the Earth and the cosmos. Cosmos and Matter therefore presents a new proposition, one that can be understood through the sensitivity of our bodies, the power of our perceptions and the depth of our emotions. This is why the installation can be visited barefoot”. How can we live differently in our homes? This is the question that led to the creation of the apartment, which presents 10 scenes in different rooms, tracing a sensory journey. Each space highlights a facet of the art of eco-friendly living, where the alchemy between tradition and modernity invites aesthetes, designers and art lovers to challenge themselves. The apartment features a Botanical Bar, a Table des Vivants, a Salon de la Lune, a Salon du Soleil and a “cosmic soundscape” room.
“I wanted the selection to focus on designers, artisans and artists who respect natural cycles and universal laws, Marie-Cassandre points out. It’s about celebrating a form of luxury that respects not only the human soul, but also the Earth”. The materials chosen for the pieces on display reflect the Cosmos and Matter philosophy: reclaimed wood, natural textiles, pigments derived from the earth, vegetable leathers obtained from dehydrated fruit and vegetables, and other living, natural and healthy materials, all selected for their low impact on the environment. The Paris exhibition is just the start of a long multi-sensory adventure, with plans already underway to bring Cosmos and Matter to other ephemeral spaces in different cities and countries, to challenge our perceptions of sustainability and inspire new design practices.
