Nestled near picturesque Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA, this magnificent 141,640 m2 property reflects a deep appreciation of the land’s history. Designed by CLB Architects, it combines the charm of a traditional ranch with the elegance of modern architecture.
Created by CLB Architects and located near a strip of aspen and cottonwood trees overlooking the old Snake River bed in Wyoming, the property houses a couple’s main residence, a barn and stables. The design is inspired by the site’s past as a cattle ranch, with century-old irrigation ditches, remnants of a 19th-century trapper’s cabin, corrals and hunting trails frequented by hundreds of elk during the season. The choice of location was dictated by the clients’ commitment to wildlife and conservation, as well as their passion for horses and desire to return the land to its historic working ranch roots. The barn, corral and pastures are spread out a short distance from the home, ensuring constant visibility of the equines. In addition, the area boasts access to miles of private horse trails leading to the Snake River and Grand Teton National Park, further immersing residents in the natural beauty of the area. The main house is designed as a low, three-bedroom structure that rises gradually from the meadow, with a compact second floor housing the owners’ bedroom and an office giving access to a terrace on the cross-laminated timber (CLT) roof. Its long slope is achieved by deep cantilevers housing a platform for alfresco dining, with panoramic views of the Teton Mountains to the west and the Gros Ventre range to the east. The palette of materials, including stained cedar, steel and concrete, pays homage to the site’s history. The L-shaped floor plan separates living spaces from secondary areas. The living room, dining room, kitchen, relaxation area and master bedroom open onto protected outdoor areas equipped with a fireplace, pizza oven, etc. Inside, white oak and polished concrete floors, steel and walnut joinery add to the natural aesthetic of the place. All in all, this project allows the owners to reconnect with their equestrian ties, and places the traditional ranch in a forward-looking perspective.
